Kendall Giles, Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, received his PhD in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University and is PhD ABD in Science Technology and Society at Virginia Tech. Dr. Giles has over 20 years of work experience in government and with companies such as General Electric and Raytheon in software and systems engineering roles. He has taught training courses offered through the US Department of Veterans Affairs, covering the fundamentals of cybersecurity, computer networks, and information assurance. He has served as a research scientist at the Human Language Technology Center of Excellence in Baltimore, Maryland, and as a faculty mentor and research fellow at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. In 2022 he was awarded a Certificate of Teaching Excellence and in 2024 he was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, both from the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. His research interests include epistemic practices and risk in sociotechnical systems, the governance of emerging technologies, and engineering translation. Overall, his research sits at the intersection of engineering, the governance of emerging technologies, and science, technology, and society as a critical and interdisciplinary scholar. Also, with a focus on public engagement he produces the TechnoSlipstream podcast. Finally, via the Pseudodragon Project he plays bagpipes across the Greater Roanoke Valley and beyond.
